Bagnoregio

Civita di Bagnoregio stands alone on a crumbling tuff plateau in northern Lazio, reachable only by a footbridge built in the 1960s. Locals call it la città che muore, the dying town, because the cliffs beneath it have been eroding for centuries, carrying pieces of the town away with them. It has been inhabited since Etruscan times, over 2,500 years ago, though only a handful of residents remain.
