San Pietro stands on the hill where the Etruscans built their acropolis, overlooking the town of Tuscania in the province of Viterbo, Italy. The basilica was begun in the 8th century and rebuilt over the centuries into one of the finest Romanesque churches in the country.

The façade is carved and weathered, watching over the town for more than a thousand years. Inside, 12th-century floor mosaics and frescoes made by hands that knew exactly what they were doing. Places like this weren't built to impress. They were built to last. That's why they still stop you.

This photograph was made as part of my landscape, street and architecture work while travelling through Italy — the same eye I bring to portraiture, applied to stone and light.

This print is 120 x 80 cm on Hahnemühle FineArt Pearl with a 5cm border.
