The Valle dei Calanchi lies in the province of Viterbo, in Lazio. Calanchi are a form of badland erosion, soft clay and silt cut by centuries of rain into steep, bare ridges. Seen from above, the valley reads as geology rather than scenery, ridge folding into ridge until the tree line takes over.
